Through this project I hope to learn more about organic vs hard-surface shapes (and getting those organic surfaces to look right) and practice creating various materials. Re: Why grime and wear on textures?
It is ok up to a point. Does not have to be old and scratchy. Even if it is a clean surface, you should do work to show levels of handling(hand prints,smudges), reflective, diffuse, etc it is. Sometimes trying to get the surface variances to show up in-game, you have to take it up a notch or two to be seen. Just my opinion. -

I think I'm going to take a go at this, the only thing I am unsure about is how to extract the circles out of a flat surface in maya. Would I want to do hard surface modeling toggling back and forth from smooth view, or simply double-extrude and and move around vertices? Thank you in advance :) -

Looks more or less correct to me? Remember that with caustics, it's a simulation of light entering these surfaces getting bent hither and thither and eventually leaving in an appropriate way. sidestepping a bit..create a NURBS curve and extrude it along the spline. convert the resulting surface into polygons, set the output to count/quads. now don't delete the history. just continue to edit the splines and the polygon surface should update in realtime. so the controls aren't all in one place like in max's way… -
