Whoa! those are some crazy shapes going on. Over-all I think you're doing a pretty good job of controlling it, but you're right - it is a little blobby. If this were Max I'd ask if you'd tried sub-d by smoothing groups, as it'd probably get you cleaner and easier to manage results...no idea if there's a way to do that in… -

I figured it out after many more hours of kadoodling with it. In Maya I didn't smooth the normals correctly which I think was throwing the normal map off. Instead of using "smooth edges" I had to set the normal angle to 180 degrees on all the faces (which is the exact same thing, but oh well), then re-exported the FBX.… -

@Grimwolf, when this happens to me, the "Recalculate Vertex Normals" button usually helps to fix things. I'm not having the issues you're having with harden and soften on multiple face or edge selections. The integrated Vertex Normal Toolkit has been fine for me. So, this is related to changing anything in Maya? And not the fact this is a skinned mesh? I know that if you save an FBX in Maya and then open it it Max the smoothing groups get screwed up. Well I know but I cant use any smoothing splits because I have only one UV chunk right ? I would have to also split the UVs at that point because of the needed padding or ? So anyways I tried to apply a different smoothing group to the seat and also split my UVs at that edge but it did not change anything. Kinda wierd -

Can you specify where the cuts are? Right now the entire bone is lowpoly so there isn't really any hard edge that sticks out in my eyes. If you want smooth edges I'd recommend smoothing normals before extracting the bone into multiple pieces, this way the normals will for sure line up correctly even after the boken has…
