Just by judging the concept thumbnail, i think you're blocking is a bit too wide? definately chunkier then the concept. Still looks absoloutely beautiful. -

You could also make an image a pattern (select all, Edit > Define Pattern), use a Pattern Fill adjustment layer, and change the scaling. -

Should be. That's mainly how terrains work with Unreal3and other games, a color map which defines the blendings. Correct me if I'm wrong tho. -

Concentrate on the structure of the face. Get used to using the trimdynamic brush or flatten brush to define your face planes properly. Here is an example image: -
