These days I tend to be a bit more carefull with swooning over pre release footage, most tends to bullshots and bullshot "ingame footage" which really hurts the artists working their butts off on all that stuff as they get most of the backlash from the fans. "doesnt anything like the e3 demo!" etc etc/

Yeah, unless I'm missing something, there's absolutely no reqason to use the green channel of a photo for part of the bumpmap. What you're doing is simply using the green light information of the photo.. so if you have a green spoon and a red spoon, going to the green channel would give you absolutely different results…
