sounds like your scene does not have proper lighting. Try placing a light in your scene and rebuilding lighting. -

Unchecked "Cast shadow" seems to be the issue. And don't forget to "Rebuild" your light after any change (Ctrl + shift + ;) -

If the meshes in quads you could try rebuilding subdivisions in zbrush to lowest possible polycount and do your changes that way. -

Can Mental Ray for Maya 2013 render polypaint? I would likely have to rebuild the .cpp for polyPaintImporter.mll for that version. -

The difference is that you have the option to buy a prebuild machine, you don't have to. What I'm fear is that all Intel products is going this way, so you stuck with limited selection. If the soldered motherboards is just another option, then no problem, as long we get all the other options, but making it the only option…
