It seems alot of people are just printing themselfs theses days. Check this artist's blog. He documents his process with a Form 1 Printer. Super cool stuff.
In my opinion you don't have to follow a certain style, just try to be unique and different. I would show those scanners/printer. I think they are worth it!

Back on this project, this time 3Dprinting both Zoom and Black Flash as busts with swappable heads and symbols, decided to make the base as a portal as if he’s coming through the portal from Earth 2 like in season 2 of the show.
