Thanks for the reply kinetic. First time I tried to make hair like this (well, in a decent way anyway), but yes, I start with splines and create planes that way...
I'm quite fond of Strider (double helix/capcom). Some might dismiss its more simplistic look but I find it effective, it's very cohesive and captures the kinetic energy of the game.

Hey thanks kinetic. Been working on that Thane doodle I did xD. Only doing a bust though, I'm basing it off the official Zbrush renders I saw from Bioware, so pretty easy since I'm using such refined reference.
