Would the point light baking thing only really be used on stylized art or can it be used on more next gen type models? And what exactly would it help? Not only that, would baking point lights be done in Max? This is really cool!
Two things can you post a screenshot of your material in ue4 and also have you tried baking lights to see if that fixes it? Could possibly be your light maps, do you have them set to auto gen in ue4?
Ben tell me you're going to do PBR this time round? Your Atchisson was great work but it felt like it was held back as a pure show piece by staying with previous-gen DSGN maps and not going PBR (and by the 1024 textures as well).
Spend 1100-1200 with a strong CPU and enough ram plus a GPU good for the next 2 years, then spend the remaining 300-400 on a new GPU once the next-gen consoles have landed and given the PC market a bit of a push.
Ok in this case everything smell like old gen texturing cut and paste images or seamless texture overlayed onto UVs Skinning to something existing is pretty easy just bind to joints that will move it and copy weights from the model below
I wrote a tutorial explaining how to convert texture content made for older gen shaders (and convert between metalness and specular pbr workflows) that has some examples and detailed explanations of the differences. http://www.marmoset.co/toolbag/learn/pbr-conversion
Obviously not all of them but one problem Japan did have last gen (and maybe still does) was how badly they adapted to shaders. Even now with their handheld games, you rarely see some kind of normal mapping that isn't by Capcom.
The CPU is a very good choice, although you could get an 8 cores AMD (FX-8350) with similar performances for the same price. It may help in the future gaming wise as most next gen multi-platform games will be heavily multithreaded.
all that awesome trendy next gen goodness takes time. or buy a system that doesn't annoy the hell out of you. keep falling for it and eventually those load screens will be replaced with product advertising to help kill 2 minutes of your time.
This is still very pertinent, it's not like all we do nowadays is next-gen stuff anyway. Also I can think of thousands of uses for an 8 sided cylinder besides bolts on a low poly model and this would definitely come in handy.
