You don't really need a script for that in newer Maya versions. In your UV window just go to polygons > layout [] and set "Prescale" to "World". -

Little side project, touched up lowpoly new engine :) Made a material that blends the UV layout over the model with intensity and color parameters. -

I don't suggest changing the layout. Unless it's an improvement of some sort, something that's meant to be persistent. The skins would be merely different color palettes.
