the size and amount of textures doesn't really effect performance. the amount of materials and the amount of batches/draw calls that will result out of them does ... the fewer draw calls the better ! so try to use as few materials as you possibly can without fucking up your own work flow too much. -

the amount of AAA titles i play is very few and the amount of titles i finish per year can probably be counted on one finger that said... i play a fair amount of indie games that seem better suited to our/my generation... shorter more interesting and varied and more fun less stress. -

animatr, you're pretty close with your last guess there. You have to pay tax on all income....if your projected extra earnings are going to be over a certain amount and taxes will not be witheld by the company paying you, the IRS prefers that you pay estimated taxes on the income. As for the "amount of tessellation to make the spheres look good" it is true that you would need to tessellate quite a bit. It would help if you already modeled very low poly sphere in the low poly object. That would reduce the tessellation amount. Other techniques, like tessellation only on the silhouette of the object… -

The usual specular model makes surfaces tend to perfect reflection at shallow view angles - mainly because that is actually what happens in real life, you just don't see it much because its hard to put your head close enough to the ground to see it (also atmospherics etc).
