Pics are pretty small but you are probably using standard lights. Can't do that. Must be PointlightToggleable or PointLightMoveable. The defaults are static.

Could it be the compression settings on your normal map when you imported it? Make sure it is set to normal compression, and not default.

yeah i don't think that was ever a default in maya -- have to convert the polies to subD and extract nurbs curves from that.

I wouldn't even say it's default in 3ds max. Just keep your cage tight and no more wavy edges

Or you can find the setting under Customize > Preferences... Gizmos Panel > Size: Default value is 30 I guess.

On the subject of blurry MR renders, try playing with the filtering. It defaults to a Guassian 3X3, trying going to a mitchell or lancos 4X4.

All head renders will be done in Max from now on with Mental Ray, default lighting and fast skin sss shader.

You are correct sir, 10 is default. I usually have to start at about 20 though, seems to be the magic number :)
