hmm did you mess with the envelopes mid animation or add the bone to the modifier mid animation or did you do it when it was in its t-pose. Vig - Makes a lot of sense. That way the modifier won't affect the actual uvw map when its gone, but the normals should map out the same for both sides. Wouldn't have thought of that.
