Max 2017 got selection bug that I noticed as well, sometimes unable to select certain verts/ edges/ faces. You can try to convert to editable mesh then back to editable poly, it'll fix sometimes, but some other time it just simply wont. Rotate viewport from another angle to view your mesh also might help with the selection…
