The ID Selector filter has been discontinued a while ago, it is now replaced by the "Add color selection" item in the effect drop down menu.

Transfer attributes is super-finicky. If you have a bunch of similar items, it'll often work on some but not all of them with no apparent rhyme or reason.

Both are fine. As chiniara said, they're just tools. Pick one and learn it. You're not going to 'create better items' by using a specific software.

My thoughts would be dynamics as well. Use proxy items/bounding box for collision. Could maybe even try using particles and the instancer?

Your item can only have one texture map so you will have to redo them. Also take the time to make the masks.

Unreal 4 engine deals with this with sockets, I think you can easily "release" an item from a socket, but I haven't messed with it yet.
