I went for a couple of weeks, first stop was Bangkok. Went to the royal palace which was pretty cool. Theres a square there where you can get some really green curries and feed the thousands of cat fish in the canal: http://www.travelkris.com/wall/Thailand1280.jpg…

Looks good. Though the white models are making it really hard to see your paint work, because they're so damn bright. One way to do this is a light colored wireframe on top of the textured model. Like this, just to pick a recent example: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2357035&postcount=6918

That's something I'm wondering about, actually. I tried out importing some GIFS into Unity to judge them VS. the full-color TGA textures, and there was SOME size reduction, but not as significant as when I just viewed the TGA and GIF side by side in a file manager. Here's the OBJ: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2355669/bodypanel.obj This has the body & panels. You can see when you explode, the low poly barely moves, then the hp panels move with the body, instead of going off on their own.
From what it's looking like, they made a background image re-using symbols and shapes. Then the foreground is a pattern made probably in Photoshop, and like Justin said you could use some textures or texture brushes on your pattern to get that effect. Also, it's not the exact style but hope this helps!…
You can get Unity Free and use Lux which is a free PBR shader set http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/235027-Lux-an-open-source-physically-based-shading-framework It can be good for visualizing the texture work, though it won't be the best thing I think if you want final renders for a portfolio.
