Automatic Mapping is probably what you want, it has 6-plane projection by default (same as box mapping).

I either just screen grab directly from the viewport or do a quick render with default lighting disabled.

Yeah, they have renderable checked and I just tried applying a standard default shader with no luck.. Weird shit.

Try switching to the advanced viewport, the default viewports are much simpler and don't support custom tangent bases, etc

Justin - i have tried lots of different settings and TBH previously the defaults worked fine(ish) with curves.
