Ok, then you would need to set your transform to Relative to Parent, because that's where you will scale down your different elements before blending them together. Set each transform to Relative to parent, set the tiling to no tiling, and scale down by 50% in the Transformation settings.
I feel unpaided internships are a bit of exploition, but actually paying to work for a studio is ridiculous unless it is set up like a school. I just imagine a dozen kids doing boring tasts like cleaning up mocap animation and tracking points for 50 hours a week.

It's not too expensive to be honest. It's cheaper than the professional version of Crazy Bump, and only $50 more than the personal version. I welcome new tools as they come. Because I already own Crazy Bump, I can't say I'll be buying this, but it's something to keep an eye on.
My old AMD Phenom runs at like... 45C @ 25% power. I think you're fine man :P. If you're really paranoid I think you can always get a new CPU cooler or something, a good one might cost you $50.
Well, that is just amazing work. I'd heavily question the 50's style radio in what is clearly a 60's style retro sci-fi setting, looks rather Falloutish and out of place. But otherwise everything looks fantastic and even the radio is super well done.
If you can't find work for yourself, you won't find work for a studio. Build constant stream of projects first. Build client base. Build you credentials. Only when you will be overwhelmed with work, start thinking about making a studio. Just my .50
It really depends on what you like. For example I cannot drink any smokey whisky. After trying 50+, my favroutite ist still Glenlivet 12. Glenmorangie (10 + Lasanta) are also one of my favs. Oh and btw, try the Plantation XO rum...
