Best way to do it is half and half like a few have already said, or take a small deposit of the initial price (say 20%) and ask for the rest on submission of the asset.

Game engines that are free. Cryengine 3.5 Unity3D UE4 is only $20 for a one-time, unpdatable buy, but comes with everything. Source code, etc. And a solid basic renderer.

The $50/month is for the full Adobe suite. Photoshop and Lightroom have a combo deal for $10/month. (Photoshop alone is $20/month for some reason known only to marketers.)
