Update! Solved the problem after reading some documentation and reddit posts. The solution was not using such a small cube (20x20cm) and using a lot of segments (50 on xyz) on a bigger cube. 5 iterations is fine.

I'm not sure I'd say 'terrible', just brutally brutally difficult. I've had just as much fun solo as with AdHoc, it's just incredibly tough (especially soloing later group quests). There's still all the Elder quests for solo play though and I find them pretty fun. In fact because of how much of a faff it is to get PSP…
