Atan2 takes a X and Y and returns the angle around 0 as -pi to pi. I'm also doing some addition/multiplication in there too just to get the scales/offsets right.

only thing i can think of is creating some planes in max along the x/y/z axis and importing them as a subtool, making them visible/invisible as needed.

Can you confirm that you created an opengl normal map in painter - or if you use a directx normal map, flipped the y channel (as Earthquake wrote)? You could upload mesh and normal map, so people can take a look.
