@ Joopson Which is why I asked specifically for examples of other people using Maya. So I could see what stuff doesn't trigger crashes and just do that. It's my fault for posting to the wrong forum. changed gravity from 0.7 to 1.5 to great effect, along with inverting the bend resistance (I was interpreting it backwards from the documentation) -

I confirm that this is a known bug introduced in maya 2017 update 4. It has been solved in maya 2018 update 1. -
