Because it is actually useful when you are boolean'ing lower poly meshes that aren't so heavily subdivided with so many extra coplanar edges. Well it won't really matter too much if you learn either maya or max, but I'm guessing that some studios will be a bit scared if they see you only have used Blender, that label might go away by the time you start working though, but yeah usually they only look at your work and usually most artist gets used to maya or max… -

Ruz: Yeah, you could use the original "source" mesh as a base for the in-game mesh... but I usually find the two models will result in fairly different mesh layouts, and hacking around with the source mesh ends up taking equally long. CAD seems like an unnecessary stage added to the process. Sketching ideas down on paper is a commonly used pre-production strategy, as developers usually create a top down map of levels anyway for art and gameplay elements.
