I was thinking this exact same thing too, but I then realised that if this were the case, pressing C would (sometimes) come with a significant delay. Maybe I'm just low on VRAM but changing between layer channels takes ~10-15 seconds on my current project. So if they were linked I wouldn't be able to cycle through channels… -
