Make a crap ton of black thumbnails. Silhouette is usually the most important aspect to good character design. Even if you have to make 50+ thumbs, it's better than just sticking to a few possibilities. Had to do that myself a couple years ago. i was gonna suggest, set up your 2nd machine to do small chunks, from the end, 12001-12600 11400-12000 11000-11399 etc and set up remote desktop/vnc to start the renders,
