You can also use a plugin like 'wrap it' to model panels directly onto the surface. I do a mix of what your describing and for more complex stuff i surface snap

Unreal supports bones and simple blendshapes. No wraps, no fallicles, nothing like that. So keep it as basic as you can. But anyways, its hard to tell whats the issue without seeing the setup.

I box mine up exactly as it came, I even wrap the mouse and pen holder in the cover they came in. Been well over a year now and it might as well be new still.
