I don't know if it's just because I purchased Mudbox before the Autodesk buyout, maybe someone who's up to date can correct me: as far as I know you have to pay for upgrades. Pixologic has been giving me free upgrades since I purchased Zbrush almost 5 years ago. -

.FBX is a file format (still being developed) that Autodesk uses. Think of it as a .OBJ file that can also export other stuff such as basic camera, animation and lighting information. You could try contacting Pixo? Problem is, outside of programs from Autodesk, most software companies don't support the 'double click file to open' approach, especially in design...for...some reason. So yeah, Pixo is your best chance, although they're too busy squashing bugs to focus on other things now. -

http://students.autodesk.com/ You can get maya and various other autodesk apps free for 13 months (it almost sounds like you can use them forever because in less than 12 months there will be another version with a free trial), I feel its better to use industry standard software if you can. -

Silly sod :) I had the Slate 7 for about 8 months, and it is a lovely piece of kit (I found Autodesk Sketchbook Pro fantastic to use on it and became my preference for sketching over Photoshop) however I just never used it anywhere near as much as my PC so I sold it to a mate at work. -

This is why I'm scared to just drop some cash on a new one! Who's to say the one I pick won't have a different set of problems?! If anyone can undoubtedly recommend a solid maya card (PCI Express 2.0 x16) I would appreciate it! Is autodesk to blame for all these issues, or does it fall on the card manufacturers? -

That's not Microsoft's fault. It's Autodesk (or Alias|Wavefront, or Discreet, or whoever wrote the apps in the first place). They chose not to use OS-native dialogs, and wrote their own. My favorite baking software has always been xNormal and believe it or not: Autodesk Mudbox. Even for hard-surface models, I find the Mudbox tool not just good and accurate, but it is also very fast. And xNormal comes with so many good settings you should have that piece of software in your art toolbox imo. -

Hmm, well if it's a program your looking to use i would personally suggest Autodesk 3ds max 2009, 2010 or what i use now 2011. its incredible once you get used to it in the first week. any other specifics you require? cause i can help you in any of those departments!
