Are the asteroids randomly generated? If so, it should be really simple to have it randomly select a detail texture and vertex color to have a lot of variety quickly. -

I think the issue is most likely the noisiness of the mesh you want to substract and not the Dynamesh settings. I tried out something similar quickly: -

Hey Ryan, I noticed that tabbing through the selection fields appear random in nature. It would be nice to tab down through the fields quickly. -

Created some modular shelving so I can vary up the sections between doors a little bit in my scene nice and quickly.
