Thanks guys. So what I understand is you are modeling an asset and editing the normals. To help with the normal editing you add support loops or breaks between surfaces to allow you to edit the normals freely, like in the examples you show above. For the high frequency details I guess you could just use ndo, or ddo or…
Starting up a WIP thread since I'm entering the new 70s and 80s style sci-fi competition! The first skin I've been working on is designed to look like a prop from a movie, design inspiration came from looking at Star Wars and Alien set designs. I tried to make it look like it was made from different plastics. Here's my…
BARDLER- Yeah Maya! HitmonInfinity - Thank you! Haha I haven't seen too many other "game prop threads". Now I feel like digging through the whole forum for them. I choose vintage objects because they have a lot of intricate shapes. They've helped me master creating shapes quicker as opposed to the usual sci fi corridor…
What I'm seeing: - Like animals - Preference to Sci Fi - Character Artist - Light, fun, adventurous flavor to your personal style. Happy, not cynical or sad. Pros: - Clear personal style assertion - You can make game art that has gone into an engine, etc. Cons: - Your personal design sense for sci-fi isn't immediately…
Sci fi hallways are always a blast, good for any skill level. You'll brush up on creating geometry in creative new ways without worrying about it being "right" since it's sci fi, and kick up your metalic texturing which is always fun. Most importantly it gets you thinking modularly which is a core skill to have, work…
The wing looks paper thin. Even if you say its sci-fi magic, look at the rudder in comparison. Its about ~4 times as thick. Fatten them up a bit with a taper towards the wing tip. And give it a taper front to back. Check out real wing ribs. This will plant the design and make it seem more grounded and functional. :)
Looking really solid! i think maybe some of the arena pics are a bit dark, there kind of hiding some of your work, that could just be my screen though, hard to tell. Like s0id3 was saying maybe just some kind of modern hero prop/vehicle or sci-fi enviro? it's still a very strong enviro portfolio though.
that pointy collar thing would be annoying imo. I have to say conceptually, this reads almost as fantasy armor, with a little bit of sci fi. I can work my brain to see it the other way too, but yeah. Planetside as I recall has a starsiege tribes vibe to it; as a graphical update this seems kind of divergent so far.
Your stuff's come on leaps and bounds, Sam, you've got a really impressive portfolio there! Agree that the RS illustration stuff maybe isn't as strong as your other concept stuff (and I'd be tempted to say it detracts from whats a stellar sci fi portfolio over all). dA's folio site isn't ideal in terms of 'pretty', but it…
I just saw it as the march-of-technology showing the age of Alien, personally. In 1979, shit-loads of CRTs hooked up to computers was sci-fi - for us now it's the already past. It's perhaps a little jarring if you were to deliberately try and have the films sequential, but otherwise I'd say it's unimportant; it's the…
