I use Silo at work to do a bulk of my modelling. Export as .obj to max/zbrush.

This pattern happens to me if I use .obj or alembic. FBX works fine though

What is the format you're exporting with? Try both .fbx and .obj and see if there's any difference.

scratch that.. I was exporting as FBX from 3ds max obj makes it work fine

Thanks Joe, exporting the obj with both smoothing groups and normals fixed my issues. :)
