I really don't know if there's any special trick to enhance it; they're most certainly also baking gradient maps and using them with the Point Light Maps to push the value gradation. Other than also manually painting lighting in the diffuse by using more saturated versions of the colors, there probably isn't much to it. I…
It was indeed funny, but the dogs kinda lacked the overall quality / style as the rest of the TF2 game, so that kinda told me it was a "fake"... but really well done :)
Makes more sense now. And Glynn, yes I got that part, I've seen that before with TF2's ramped shading, but this is being used for diffuse colors instead of shading colors. ZBrush ships with a bunch of human models that should be fine for what you're doing. You can get to them in the Tool section of Spotlight. EDIT: Swear I read ZBrush and not Maya. If you do have ZBrush you could pull in one of those models. Otherwise, it should be fairly trivial to hunt down a free model on somewhere like…

Actually I just start this from my very very rough sketch at first I intend to make something up for a base mesh comp. on GA (gameArtisans) But, in the end I change my mind about it and continue make it into my personal…
