It's not an issue with the Dota 2 settings. Post your masks so we can have a look and see what the issue is. Keep in mind that if your alpha channel of either mask is 100% black or 100% white the masks will not work.

100% absolutely take the job, you can always work on gamedev stuff as a hobby or as a contractor until the industry recovers. it might be rear projection rather than front - you can usually get away with settings that a lot higher., if you're using the BB as a reference for the distances try setting them both to 1.0. you should get a load of projection artefacts but no misses and can work back from there
