These are Ikea lampshades that are made up of a about a dozen repeated shape cutouts. Find the instruction manual for it and you should see the shapes that need to be modeled. Model them flat, then bend them into place. I would recommend against boolean-ing anything here as that will cause a whole lot of unnecessary work. -

Depends on what you're making. If you're going to do something efficient and relatively modern like IKEA furniture typically is, stick to Maya mostly and dump it into ZBrush if you need to do details or specific weird shapes.
