I like Modo Indie on Steam. The Interface and Workflow are the most important part for me. Polystein Kit and MOP Booleans Kit as Addons. It has a Unreal Bridge (UE4-5). Strong for Hard Surface and Kitbashing, less for sculpting but you can use it for smaller parts.
I don't think you'll ever get with a CRT the fun and mess that is NTSC on a TV... reds bleed like crazy, interlacing does funny mojo (assuming your game is rendering 60fps), the fun that is moire, etc. I wonder if UK uses PAL though. Might be easier, never worked with it. Something like 25 fps, no interlacing?
Is there any reason you're using the node editor instead of just the attribute editor? I don't know how that stuff works, but plugging it into the material using the built-in interface is super easy.
You can setup maya navigation without going full maya mode! Just setup the navigation hotkeys in the mouse tab of the customize user interface settings and adjust the zoom direction
Try deleting your local settings directory of 3ds max. 'C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsMax' should reset the whole user interface
