Thank you all for the various methods. I think there is simply no way to do it without inset, and deleting the lines afterwards will cause issues--so having 2 extra lines shouldn't be a problem.
Thank you so much for the screenshots ! Some of them seem to have that quality I was referring to - especially the yellow tank top and the gun with the mushroom growth. Can't wait to try it!

Hi thanks for the comment, i am having problems getting the snow right on the tank as it is there is too much and i think my best bet is handpainting or a mask... any idea?
ok an update. We found that exporting straight from c4d as either .dae or .3ds totally screws up the materials. It appears that c4d's file formatting and papervision's parsing of these file formats are mutually in-exclusive. Although you can get a model in, it's basically screwed. The ultimate fix was for us to export .dae…
