I'd argue it would most likely start off as one or two artist with a seat in the alternative software, and it spreads from there. A bigger studio could then just buy more seats as the software starts fitting into the pipeline and other artist become aware of it. Not all time spent with different software is on the clock… -

After watching Unreal's gdc presentation I wanted to improve my implementation of skin transmission/backscatter. I am using a phase function now, so now the scattering effect is stronger the more aligned and back facing you are with the light. The back scattering effect now works when using a skylight. Keep in mind, PS3/360 lasted as long as they did because they used crazy architecture. 360 had unified shaders that wasn't possible on PC until the Radeon 2900 came out in 2007. And PS3 had the Cell CPU which was notoriously difficult to work with that it scared a lot of Japanese Studios into releasing their games late.… -

A major factor in Modo adoption has to with the fact you dont get punished for not upgrading between versions and it is cheaper than going with Maya or Max. In short the licensing is very pro consumer. Many of love the fact we can skip upgrading, and then upgrade to the latest version at no added cost, its the same price… -
