I think what you're looking for is "maintainActiveChangeSelectMode" it can be found in: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2011\scripts\others\dagMenuProc.mel "Echo All Commands" + grepWin is how I usually find this type of stuff.
If you're a student autodesk allow you to download their software and use it for free for educational purposes. The big hitters are Max and Maya as has already been pointed out. Experiment with these two and look at the tutorials on offer for both.
For me It happens because of that export option only. Some times export settings can reset and turn that checkbox back On. Try to not use it at all. Even Autodesk suggest to turn it off in all common situations.
Solved: i had to delete the history in Maya, then delete the object, only then you can export your object without auto-attached artifacts. Christ, i just don't get along with Autodesk products :/

I can imagine these guys getting bought out by Adobe or Autodesk, they'll be making some big monies I'm sure. Awesome stuff, I've been wondering when something like this will come along.
There is no solution for this that anyone has found (I've tried contacting autodesk people to no avail). You may not get used to it but you'll stop complaining about it, our character art department went through the same thing :(
Max has viewport depth of field? I hope Autodesk decide to jerry-rig some of these features into Maya, if nothing else, so that we can use alpha mapping without unpleasant z-fighting.
you might need to manually put them into the maya plugins folder. info here: Installing a Maya plug-in | Maya | Autodesk Knowledge Network I've had to do this a couple times but its so infrequent I never remember exactly how or why.
