Is it 32bit or 64bit Max ? In my case: using shadows in 2008 32bit crashed, in 2008 64bit it worked. 2009 never gave me issues though, but you could try and see if it matters.
Hi, I'm not sure it provides shortcuts too, but you may want to take a look at this advanced Reset XForm tool. http://ruramuq.blogspot.com/2009/08/matrix-checker-reset-xform-scale.html
Also i dunno which version you are using but turbounwrap gives a lot more options to the default unwrap modifier (not sure if they improved in 2009) http://www.chuggnut.com/Scripts/TurboUnwrap/TurboUnwrap_Max9.rar

That is a local position based on the original position of where the vert was created(is reseted when you do stuff like combine, seperate..). And 1.19e-007 simply means that its rly close to zero(0,000000119).

Here's my witch model: http://www.mediafire.com/?ygt3ud2b79lkvpz FBX, OBJ and Maya 2009 files. Textures (TGA) included too. This is my way to say thanks to Polycount, for being such a helpful and inspiring community :)
I made a version with 2 different blur settings, one for diffuse lighting, and one for specular that could be transitioned between, which was about 150 instructions. The single bit there is I believe 109-115.
