Already visited Autodesk site and installed newest updates for the version you want to use? Could depend on some hardware or software issues on your PC, max 2013 just working fine here.
Closest thing I know of that Autodesk encourages is the use of Mudbox, which actually has an amazing polypainting workflow. I believe they make it quite easy to transfer meshes back and forth if both are installed.
There was a bug in the autodesk exporter, where tris of meshes with multiple materials where multiplied by that amount. This was fixed with the FBX plugin 2013.2. There is also an update for the OpenCollada plugin for Maya 2013, but it crashes here. Hope this helps

Excellent work mate. Blender is getting better and better. I am also a previous 3dsmax user as well. I still love the program though but with Autodesk prices, it had to take a back seat :- )
Why on earth autodesk decided to make such a strange behaviour ? I mean, when i collapse a turbosmooth, i expect to have a correct edit poly, not that strange hybrid with isoline edges and unconnected points.
Just to help you with the tracking, racer445 says something like that in this tutorial: http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/autodesk-3ds-max/project-workflow-creating-a-next-gen-sci-fi-prop-day-1/
I wasnt able to find and exact material called"Autodesk Water" but i found one called Ocean, and with a little tweaking I was able to get some usable results, thank you :D
Quadro cards are nvidias professional range. everything else is "consumer grade". the difference will come in driver support, and more often than not application support. for example, autodesk only officially support quadro cards.
Sounds like it killed the licensing service. If you go Start > Run > msconfig > Services Tab, make sure "autodesk Licensing Service" is set to start up. If that's not the case you might have to reinstall it =/
