Lightmapping covers over the diffuse at a higher level, usually resulting in the shader reverting to the 'fallback'. Essentially you end up with diffuse x (8 x lightmap) meaning your original diffuse in it's 0-1 range, by a lightmap with a range of 0-8. If you want usable maps, you'll need to create the UV2 yourself… -

This usually happens to me if I'm going anything in an oddly scaled mesh and I use reset xform. There's some commands that can't be undone, and some modifiers that don't allow for base level changes. When you hit those Max usually prompts you with Hold/yes, Yes and No. Hold stores a state of your mesh… -

If I want to separate the mesh into more objects, I usually Chamfer the edges in Edit Poly and then ad the reinforced edges. And depending on the model, I decide how many Chamfer segments to ad. There shouldn't be any gap, since the vertices in the middle are snapped together, and the reinforced edges keep them in place.… -

Typically I just got into my blending options of my overlay and disable the blue channel. Usually turns out fine. I know there's another method of using a 255,255,128 color overlay set to linear burn, with the layer set to linear light at 50% fill (this is nDo2's overlay process), but that takes a bit longer for me to do… -
