If you have a Mac, you can't really beat Logic for it's all-round abilities. Pro Tools is good for recording, Cubase is good for MIDI, and theres a whole buncha other fun things like Reaper, FLStudio and Audacity for lower level stuff, but IMO Logic wins hands down. The way I’ve done animated skyboxes is with a custom shader setup. This avoids performance problems from overdraw, makes sure skybox lighting is confined to only affecting the skybox, and generally optimizes everything.
