well autodesk did release their software for free to students...off to download Softimage then! :P ugh, hour wait on softimage, trying to find the Modtool you suggested -

Smash face into desk repeatedly and wail at the Autodesk gods. Then spin around 5 times and do the worm. If your file isn't fixed, wail some more. -

Looks like something you'd get out of Autodesk 123d Catch. Even the artifacts and jaggyness with smaller objects. Not to mention it's also a cloud based scanning method. -

I used VRML a long time ago with Max, but just used vertex colors, no maps. Have you tried posting on Autodesk's offical Max forum?
