The technical part is actually much more simplier than it seems. It's all about accuracy in your mark making, the ability to correctly pick/chose/use colors ... and that's about it, there is nothing really "technical" (in the digital sense) about that. I concur with the dropping teh gradients of doom. They're pretty dated for almost everything minus a very very subtle/not even noticeable gradient. Why not save that money and get an NAS for a cloud storage in your home? That way, you get complete control over the data and the hardware that stores it.
