Its Zbrush with the mudbox mat cap shader. I start by carving in the deep indents with the standard brush then pinching those, and then I use the clay tubes brush with a square alpha and run it along the pieces of wood following the grain. Then follow that up with the flatten brush on any wood grain that is out of place. -
Re: High to low baking issues in substance painter.
The bake rays are intersecting with neighbouring geometry, particularly as these appear to be non-contiguous pieces. It also looks as though the resolution/texel density is quite low. The best solution would be to use Bake Groups, followed by exploding the model, followed by fiddling with the ray distances until you get… -

@Felixenfeu Thanks for the feedback. For the biceps I think I will follow the concept but make it slightly less round. Something in between the concept and your photo. For the obliques you are right, my mind was following the flow of the serratus anterior or the ribs I guess. Anyway thanks for pointing that out. -

They're hard limits enforced by the importer. Everyone follows them because they have to and I don't know any specific examples of workshoppers going past the limits themselves. I know there's a script you can modify to change the limits but for the most part everyone follows them. -

first sculpt - creature bust
