I must say I've tried both approaches (as well as some others like conform to surface via poly freeform) and still can't do it nicely. The ffd mod is too rough for me, also pathdeform does a bit different thing in my case
Thank u guys for the comments. @Autocon, you're right they use quite saturated colors, and i actually tried some of those combinations when i was "color-testing" trying to decide the final setup...in the end they looked to me too exagerated, almost annoying to look at. So i went for a slightly darker mood, chosing a less…
Oh just making deeper search aaaand.... this :D God Damn it ! https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/35329/lpv-causing-crash-with-translucent-material-in-a-m.html Also this: FFFFUUUUUU..... :D
@ablaine flicking through this and suddenly got hit with a blast from the oh some awesome gaming past when I saw your more realistic Beatrice. Now I'm wondering what the rest of the FF9 team would look like in that style :D
Try using a 2x2x2 FFD modifier, should help a bit with getting a smooth surface while angling it.. that or.. delete everything but the outer side and rotate it.. then exttrude the edges needed, add a symmetry modifier, and then a shell modifier and done. I don't think you should be all too worried about tri-counts or such…

I definitely had to tweak the shit out of it to get it to look alright. for instance, there's an instruction in the shader that "distorts" the incoming light based off of the normals of your shader, and it didn't look that great at…
Is this a bad time to point out that you've missed the taper of the main receiver? It's thinner top-to-bottom at the front trunion (base of the barrel) than it is at the rear (where the buttstock attaches). Check your references again... ...and then please don't kill me, it's going to be a major FFFFFUUUUUU moment.
Planetside (1) was a huge influence for me that finally got me to start investigating 3d art (and at the same time Counter-Strike 1.5). Others that come to mind were Legend of Dragoon, FF8, FF10, Metal Gear series, etc. Then Gears of War came out and wrecked my life
A. In max, FFD is probably what you want B. If the text is popping out, its easy to get a seamless look with floating geo. C. Worst case, float it, and then merge it all together when you've got the look you want.
