In a strange way i felt the version of the character in the flower green version was more original than the lava style version but still both are awesome concepts ! can't wait to see the final result !

do the student versions of those let you export in a version valve accepts, from what I understood you can only save a specific file type that the student versions read.
check for versions if you are using the workflow above if you run into problems you propably have wrong versions of blender or the plugin or render doc, check documentation for required versions

Softimage supports FBX. You can even use the latest version of Crosswalk (2014?) even if you're still using an older version of Softimage itself (like 2011).
