Oh hey, speaking of the tricount: http://www.artforcode.org/node/106 I don't know if this is possible, but if you guys add a bounty of your own to this, it will become more attractive to developers!
Both TexTools and TurboTools work on 2016/2017. Also, I recommend Polyunwrapper plugin. I can't imagine life without it now.(it also has UV>SG function)
I'd gladly suspect your non standard resolution to be a culprit of your trouble ;) (1016) try to use power of 2 +1px eg 1025 as heightmap resolution or similar number..
To be frank I look up HK 416 cross section rails and that was there. I found another picture that I am going to use, so it's back to the drawing board lol
You might be running Maya 2016 which has default Viewport color transformation set to sRGB? It's the parameter to the very right of all the small buttons on the top-bar of the viewport.
You can also try Rescale Clusters in the Edit UVW window. http://help.autodesk.com/view/3DSMAX/2016/ENU/?guid=GUID-2AEF6A44-859D-434E-8E08-00D2A480A0CD

console command: changesize 1 adjust the 1 to 0.6 or whatever feels nice. Though they may have removed this console command in newer versions of UDK like that did with setspeed
Quick update regarding versions of the tools used: Max and Maya: 2016 .fbx version 2014/2015 updates are installed I've just checked this on 3ds max 2014 and it's the same.
