Great progress! This is looking really crisp and clean. I'd echo what Faf mentioned. The details are a little noisy. I think especially the center/floating bit is hard to read visually. If you could make the floating part pop a bit more it would help a lot. Maybe with some smoke or magic glow coming out of the crater?
Thanks for the help 3D... I'm defiantly going to do an AO pass on all of my props, very good idea. Now when you say floating verts, do you mean floating geometry that isn't sewn together, because I'm not sure what you mean. I really do appreciate the help your giving me.
Okay now im stuck. That deco piece above should I just use it as piece of floating geometry to set up against the column? Or should I just use this as a normal map and texture it on the column? Which will look the best? I'm thinking the floating geometry idea, but I afraid it might up the polycount more. Any suggestions?
@SuperFranky I have also added the floats to the geo, I am seeing them in the normals but very very faint and I also see some interference of the highpoly floats showing up in places of the UVs that they should not be in. Should I make a copy of max file available and see if anyone can find the issue?
... instead, do some floating geometry. it'll be easier since you wont have to connect everything together and possibly get some weird shading/normals. just make a screw and have it float over the spot. there should be a wiki post about it somewhere around here. if you didn't know about them already that is.
Subject matter like this is very good for hipoly practice, but it seems like you are skipping the most interesting parts to model by floating geo. Make a conscious effort to model those things out, as opposed to simply floating them. It's finding solutions to those modeling challenges that will make you a better and more…
Pretty much what darbee said, also it looks like on the side you were using floating geo to make some indents but the AO still baked around the floating piece (at least this is how it looks given the way the AO baked). Make sure you remember to clean that up otherwise it looks a little funky.
I couldn't stop laughing when I saw this picture. It's the perfect image for the beginning of every DW. Big shinny balloon floating in the air with just enough helium to hover above our heads but not float up to the sky. Yet every time the string is in our grasp and the funs about to start the wind magically starts to blow…
NOT DEAD! Needed to take a couple steps back and work on the big picture rather than messing around with the details. so i blocked out a layout! Critiques and comments welcome and appreciated. and everything is floating off the ground because the brush and the floor tile were z fighting and it was driving me nuts. it wont…
