People keep saying that this is all a matter of triangulation in max, i think that is a load of shit. You can have an entirely triangulated mesh in max and still get bogus errors you wouldn't get a in maya. A few things: 1) It looks like your wood grain on the shelving is flowing the same way across every piece. Unless it was carved out of one giant piece of wood the grain is going to flow in a way that makes that piece the strongest it can.
