It's one of the weirdest things, having something running in the background: lets plays, podcasts, music, makes me focus much better, coincidently I can't remember a thing of what I actually listened to. You could say it keeps your mind busy.
Give yourself a time limit to start with say half an hour to do something. I find putting a film or tv show, podcast on in the background, something that distracts that part of the brain helps.
