My guess at these low numbers is the relative "ease" to outsource self contained assets such as characters compared to outsourcing fully playable environments and the quantity of assets that goes with that.
I think the number we were guesstimating was around 300-400 worldwide. When you think about it, is INSANELY low. WoW has 15 Character Artists on (scope wise) is the LARGEST game in the world, with no outsourcing. LoL is the most popular game in the world, and they're at 12. From a quick look, most single player games…
It is "just" the inhouse numbers, there are plenty plenty plenty more around, heck for half a year now we had a bigger character art department than riot has, and i'd call us very small. Not sure how Riot does their characters these days but they used to outsource quite a load, looking at stuff from plenty polycounters for…

Not to mention the 3 companies we use as outsourcing in Germany and 2 more in China, nor the subsidiary companies of just this individual place building another game in Germany and another in Warsaw. It's like the same threads that get…
OH I am not trying to paint any kind of picture at all. (The title of the thread is a QUESTION), and In the original post, I asked for people to tell us the studios they know of that employ full-time character artists. I don't want to include outsourcing houses, or freelancers. I simply started this thread last night to…

An artist's life has never been easy. If you can accumulate the finances to stabilize yourself when shit hits you(or if you are good with savings), eventually you become okay with the highs and lows. With ever increasing population of the world the competition will grow swiftly. But that also means that consumerism will…
